don't you hate when you're rushing somewhere and you see someone that you haven't bumped into in literally -years- and instead of stopping to talk, you wave awkwardly at them and say "oh i'm late for class, i'll ttyl"?

celebrities as disney characters

so disney started this advertising campaign where carefully chosen celebrities pose as characters from beloved disney movies. i'm a little stunned by who they selected to play certain characters but the quirky moments and ideas behind the photos are really intriguing. the quality of the photos are pretty amazing as well, thanks to annie leibovitz. i had to scrounge around to find all the pictures, so forgive the uneven sizing.

i can totally see whoopi goldberg as a crazy whimsical genie. she's looking a little too mischievous for me though.

now this photo looks a little too contrived to me, though props to disney for getting a deer in the shot. would have liked to see more hair flying - the background looks too windy for jessica biel's hair not to be a little more blown. my favourite memory from this movie is pocanhontas talking to grandmother willow - now that would have been an awesome shot.

gisele bundchen as wendy, tina fey as tinker bell, and mikhail baryshnikov as peter pan. i love the moment, but think that mikhail is on the wrong side of 8 to be playing peter. actually, so is gisele bundchen, though she is beautiful in this shot.

david beckham plays prince phillip. i'm really enjoying that disney is shooting princes - disney movies have always been dominated by its princesses, and i'm glad to see a male take the lead.

i love rachel weisz. i'm not so sure i love this shot. there's a really cute one of her feeding a doe (candids) though.

this is one of my favourite shots. the background reminds me of the magestic isles of skye in scotland...what could be more appropriate for king arthur (roger federer)?

okay, this is possibly my least favourite shot of the lot. jlo and marc anthony? on a magic carpet? it takes away from the inventiveness of this series. the carpet is gorgeous though.

this is alice, the mad hatter, and the march hare, played by beyonce, oliver platt, and lyle lovett respectively. again, liking the non-traditional vibe.

what would a disney dream cast be without a cinderella? here we have scarlett johansson running away from the ball. it's a beautiful picture and very evocative of the movie, but for some reason, it's not sitting well with me. i think i would have liked to see her busy working instead of speeding away. or maybe standing beside a pumpkin...haha.

last shot of the day: julie andrews and abigail breslin as faeries (from pinocchio). best casting for a photo yet.

my new bioethics class

so to graduate, i have to take this ethics class for bmes about medical issues and bioethics. it looks to be an interesting class - we got to look at the syllabus today, and it covers a gamut of topics, from euthanasia to plastic surgery to nanotechnology and neurobiology...i think that the class is a really good idea - especially since our instructor doesn't just have a "western" perspective on things - he's done ethics seminars in thailand and all of that, and he believes that much of ethics is rooted in our cultural understanding, which is pretty awesome.

but.

yes, but. i know in my head that this class is a fantastic idea but i'm feeling so so so uncomfortable about taking this class and having to do the assignments in it. it started when our professor (john loike) was trying to demonstrate how his thai experience showed him how different cultures are. If you were a single 40 year old female in america and you wanted to do ivf to become pregnant, you could just go to a doctor and be like...okay, let's do it. However, if you probably wouldn't be allowed to do the same thing in thailand - just because they would feel it unethical to foist a child into society without a father (the family structure is really big there). as he was discussing this, i started to feel incredibly uncomfortable - and I don't know why! he's bringing up the issues in a culturally sensitive manner, he's not going to judge you by your opinion (unless it's not well thought out), so on the surface, it seems like a very open class. However, I think that people who have a "different" opinion - perhaps the non-liberal opinion - are going to be judged by the rest of the class. And I think that I might be that person, the one with a different opinion.

Or perhaps I should say the one with the very confused opinion. I was thinking about it afterwards (the single mother scenario) and was completely torn. What would I do if I were that doctor? I am a big fan of the family, and I don't know if I would feel right about impregnating that single mother. However, am I such a proponent of the traditional family structure that I would inflict an abusive, negligent father on children? I don't know. Likewise, abortion. I'm pretty anti-abortion. But I understand the need for abortion in cases of rape or where bearing the child would lead to mental/physical harm. And I wouldn't judge someone who had an abortion because it wasn't "the right time in their life" or something (I think). So many issues depend on the circumstances. Any generalization at all is based on flawed assumptions.

It's going to be an interesting class.
